Anurag Kashyap reviews Manjummel Boys, says Bollywood left’ far behind ‘: ‘In Hindi, they can only do remakes of such ideas’

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is dropping truth bombs. The director has showered praise on the latest Malayalam blockbuster Manjummel Boys and marveled at its audacious idea, which Hindi cinema can at best only “remake” but never create.

The survival thriller movie released last month has already earned over Rs 100 cr and has been met with great acclaim. Manjummel Boys tells the story of a bunch of friends who take a vacation to Kodaikanals and things turn sour.

Anurag wrote on Letterboxd that the film directed by Chidambaram was “extraordinary” and claimed that the Malayalam cinema industry with films like Manjummel Boys and Bramayugam had surpassed Hindi cinema.

“Simply extraordinary piece of confident mainstream filmmaking. So much better than all the big budget filmmaking in india. Such confidence, such impossible storytelling. I was wondering how does one even sell this idea to a producer. Remakes of such ideas are prohibited in Hindi only. He stated that Hindi cinema is far behind with three outstanding Malayalam films in succession.

On the portal, he also went on to review Mammootty’s Bramayugam and said he is “insanely jealous” of the filmmakers of Malayalam film industry as well as the audience.

“I am just so jealous of Malayalam filmmakers.. the courage, the audacity and the amazing discerning audience of Kerala that empowers the filmmaking..I am so insanely jealous’. And Mammooty’ What has he done’ Next on the list is Kathal,” he added.

Manjummel Boys follows the group of friends from a small town go through in saving one of their own from a cave in Kodaikanal. Malayalam star Soubin Sahir has produced and acted in the film, which also features Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Ganapathy, and Jean Paul Lal.
